I'm Jessica

I've always enjoyed deep connections and listening to what other people think and feel. The sense of community is what drew me to Alberta Ave. I love organizing and hosting events to build new connections - whether that's a block party, alleyway movie night, or a small gathering around a bonfire. My summers are spent going for long bike rides, camping with friends, or simply enjoying my backyard chickens.

Hi! I am a recent high school graduate, excited to explore the world around me. That begins right here, in my community! My ideal evening is spent with friends making our homemade pizza. Yes, the dough and everything. I spend as much of my free time as possible laying in the sun listening to music. Alice in Chains is my go to sun bathing soundtrack. Fun fact…I have a family guy tattoo and I can talk to ghosts.

I'm Rochelle!

I'm the granddaughter of Dutch settlers who moved to rural Alberta. For many years I got around Edmonton by bike alone (including in the winter) and have come to love the many neighbourhoods and pathways in this city.

I love the intricacy of nature and exploring new places, but even more so I enjoy friendly and curious conversations about life, how does change happen, how do we as humans make sense of our world, what does real community mean, and what have you been learning lately? I'm interested in deepening my relationship with the place I call home, including getting to know the plants that live here by name and how they look in each season, reading old news articles to learn the history of this place, and building relationships with my neighbours in my apartment building and nearby.

The Indigenous Peoples of these lands have long been the objects of research that has taken ‘data’ out of context to tell stories that reflect researchers’ beliefs and philosophies, often dehumanizing, and reflecting at best partial understandings that reduce the complexity of culture. This research becomes a tool of colonization which Indigenous peoples have long resisted by continuing to tell their own stories, and assign their own meanings to those stories. We seek to discontinue this legacy.

We respectfully acknowledge that we are living, learning, and connecting with each other in Amiskwaciwâskahikan, on Treaty Six territory and traditional lands.
