Data as story
Data as story

Data as story

Real-life stories that keep information in context and are shaped by the perspective of the storyteller.

Data as learning

Data as learning

To support insights, better questions, reflection & self-awareness, and responsive decision-making. Passively consuming or giving up data misses the point.

Data as relationships

Data as relationships

Thinking of data as a gift and collection and sense-making as ceremony that can increase our wellbeing. Consent, choice, and autonomy are respected.

Wellbeing as journey

Wellbeing as journey

We don’t assume people already know if and how they are well, but rather, that our awareness of our own wellbeing and our ability to shape it is unfolding all the time.

Wellbeing as dynamic

Wellbeing as dynamic

Recognizing that because us humans are complex & evolving in an-ever-changing environment, we focus on moments rather than categorizing people as well or unwell.

Wellbeing as connection

Wellbeing as connection

Wellbeing as the meanings and capabilities people draw from interactions with the world rather than simply access to material things.

The Indigenous Peoples of these lands have long been the objects of research that has taken ‘data’ out of context to tell stories that reflect researchers’ beliefs and philosophies, often dehumanizing, and reflecting at best partial understandings that reduce the complexity of culture. This research becomes a tool of colonization which Indigenous peoples have long resisted by continuing to tell their own stories, and assign their own meanings to those stories. We seek to discontinue this legacy.

We respectfully acknowledge that we are living, learning, and connecting with each other in Amiskwaciwâskahikan, on Treaty Six territory and traditional lands.
